Cowgirl Soccer Defeats Southern Utah 2-0
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 13, 2019) – Behind a season-high 24 shots in the match, the Wyoming women’s soccer team (3-1-2 overall) cruised to a 2-0 win over Southern Utah Thunderbirds (0-6-0 overall) on Friday afternoon.
Wyoming came out strong with a three shots from seniors Michaela Stark and Summer Taube plus sophomore Indianna Asimus in the first six minutes but came up empty. Sophomore Keelie Wortmann had a chance with 13:09 on the clock which was blocked. Less than a minute later, a shot from the leftside of the box by Asimus reached the right side of the net to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead. The Thunderbirds had their first chance with a shot from Meghan DeHerrera that went wide. Wyoming had four looks including three on goal which were saved by goalie Brianna Aldridge. UW went in to the lockerroom up 1-0. The Cowgirls had 11 shots compared to two by Southern Utah in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the duo of Taube and redshirt freshman Jamie Tatum combined for the first seven shots for the Cowgirls with no result to add to the lead. Wyoming had a chance for an insurance goal after a yellow card was called on Southern Utah. Unfortunately, the shot by sophomore Savannah Warner was smothered by Aldridge. Finally in the 86th minute, freshman Hannah Hagen gave the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead with a shot from the 18 yard line right past the keeper. It was her first career goal. After 90 minutes, the score would end 2-0 in favor of Wyoming
“Obviously we created opportunities and in the first half could have done a little better job finishing,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “We had a few chances to finish and put Southern Utah away. Kuddos to them, they fought hard for 90 minutes. The second half was a bit different game. I don’t think we had enough chances, but we actually executed better in front of the net. It would have been nice to see us get one to go in off the rebound. We still grinded out a 2-0 win which wasn’t easy and I’m happy with that.”
Three Cowgirls, Asimus, Tatum, Taube, finished the night with a season-high five shots, while Asimus and Tatum had three on goal. Wyoming outshot the Thunderbirds 24-6 and had seven corner kicks. Stark had three shots followed by several others with one. Sophomores Hannah Lee and Riley Furbush split time in goal recording a combined for two saves.
Wyoming will be on the road Sunday against the Montana Grizzlies. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT at South Campus Stadium.
