Cowgirl Soccer Dominates Rams, 3-0
In their only match of the week, the Wyoming soccer team (2-5-0, 2-5-0 MW) recorded a decisive 3-0 win over the Colorado State Rams (2-2-1, 2-2-1 MW) on Saturday afternoon.
It was a back and forth half to begin the match. Colorado State tried to strike early with a Gracie Armstrong shot that missed high. In the 12th minute, the Rams had another scoring opportunity after a Cowgirl foul which resulted in a penalty kick. Armstrong would give CSU a prime chance to score but the shot was blocked by goalie Hannah Lee. Shortly after, Liv Layton missed left of the goal as it remained 0-0. Wyoming had its first chance in the 23rd minute from sophomore Jamie Tatum. Each team had a look at the back of the net for the remaining 20 minutes of the half which wouldn’t result in a score with the halftime score going 0-0. The Rams had five shots compared to two by the Cowgirls while CSU had three shots on goal compared to one by Wyoming.
In the second half, Wyoming came out quickly with an early strike. In the 46th minute, junior Indianna Asimus netted her second goal of the season with a low left shot which went past goalie Amelia Hammerle to put the Cowgirls up 1-0. Shortly after, the Rams had a good look at the goal with a chance by Layton that was saved by sophomore Alex Daws. The Cowgirls capitalized with an assist by Nikayla Copenhaver who reached the foot of sophomore Jamie Tatum that skirted past Hammerle to make it a 2-0 contest. It was the first goal of the season for Tatum. Colorado State responded with two quick shots by Armstrong which were saved by Daws. Wyoming continued to be aggressive and push the pace in the half. In the 57th minute following a free kick, junior Savannah Warner received a pass by Tatum that reached the back of the net giving the Cowgirls a 3-0 advantage. Despite being outshot the remainder of the half, the Cowgirls earned a hard fought 3-0 win over the Rams.
Tatum finished with a match-high three shots with two on goal. Three other Cowgirls recorded one shot each. Junior Savannah Warner played 85 minutes from her defensive position followed by Elle Webber with 80 minutes. Lee recorded three saves in her 45 minutes of action while Daws scooped up a career-high seven saves. Wyoming recorded six shots and two corner kicks.
Wyoming will finish up its regular season next week with two matches. They will take on the New Mexico Lobos on Friday, April 9, and the Utah State Aggies, on Sunday, April 11. Friday’s match will be played at 7:30 p.m. MT in Albuquerque followed by a 12 p.m. contest against the Aggies.
