Cowgirl Soccer Drops 3-1 Contest against UNM
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (April 9, 2021) – The Wyoming soccer team (2-6-0, 2-6-0 MW) held its ground against the New Mexico Lobos (8-1-0, 8-1-0 MW) in the first half, but gave up three second half goals to the Mountain Division leaders to fall by a final of 3-1 on Friday night.
New Mexico came out aggressive to begin the game and really pushed the pace on its side of the field. They would put together a string of four shots in the first 11 minutes which included two from their leading goal scorer Gwen Maly. The Lobos had two additional shots before the Cowgirls got its first look at a scoring chance. Sophomore Jamie Tatum had a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Emily Johnson. Wyoming would be outshot the remainder of the half but still would go to the lockerroom all tied up 0-0. The Lobos had nine shots compared to one by the Cowgirls.
In the second half, the Lobos came out firing with a shot in the 49th minute by Madi Hirschman that hit the top post after goalie Alex Daws was drawn out of position. Shortly after that with 52:23 on the clock, Karlee Maes got New Mexico on the scoreboard to make it a 1-0 contest with Maly on the assist. Continuing to be aggressive on their side of the field, the Lobos quickly doubled up the score with a turnaround shot from Maly past the outstretched arms of Daws to make it, 2-0. Hirshman would have the assist on the play. Maly and Maes connected again with 66:11 in the half to push the lead up to 3-0. The Cowgirls would get on the board in the 68th minute with a goal by freshman Alyssa Bedard with the assist from Ellie Johnston. It was a first goal and assist of their careers. Both teams would combined for five shots for the remainder of the half as New Mexico went on to win the match, 3-1.
Tatum finished her night with two shots while playing 81 minutes in the contest. Two others, Bedard and Faith Joiner, recorded one shot each. Goalies Junior Savannah Warner saw action in a team-high 84 minutes, while goalies Hannah Lee and Daws split time in the net. For the Lobos, Maly had four shots while three players had three shots apiece. Emily Johnson played all 90 minutes for New Mexico in goal.
Wyoming will finish up its regular season on Sunday against the Utah State Aggies. The match is set for 12 p.m. MT in Logan at the Chuck & Gloria Bell Soccer Field.
