Cowgirls Begin Four-game Homestand This Week
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 11, 2013) - The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team begins a four-game homestand starting Friday when UW hosts Weber State at 4 p.m. and continues on Sunday when the Cowgirls host New Mexico State at 1 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
The Cowgirls are coming off back-to-back wins after defeating Drake 5-2, in Des Moines, Iowa, last Friday and UNO 2-1 on Sunday in Omaha, Neb. Against Drake, senior Lucie McDowell led the charge for the Cowgirls as she recorded two goals during the match, her second career multi-goal game. Senior Liz O’Reilly, junior Kasey Curtis and freshman Laurel Ramer also scored for the Cowgirls.
In Omaha, UW was able to hold on for the victory after scoring its two goals within the first 20 minutes. Senior Olivia Mohtadi scored in the 11th minute as sophomore Jennifer Paul recorded the game winner in the 19th minute. Junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm allowed the Mavericks’ only goal of the game in the 56th minute.
For the season, McDowell has 11 shots, four goals and eight total points. Senior Liz O’Reilly is second with two goals this season to go along with two assists. Junior Sara Paul leads the Cowgirls with four assists and has scored once in nine shots.
Weber State comes into Friday with a 2-1-2 overall record. In their most recent action, the Wildcats lost a 1-0 contest to Washington State on Sunday after a 0-0 draw with Boise State on Friday.
Junior midfielder Mackenzie Day leads WSU with two goals and four total points, while sophomore forward Stacy Bair is second on the squad with one goal and three points. Ryann Waldman is 2-1-2 in goal, making 11 saves and posting a 0.54 goals-against average.
New Mexico State lost both matches last weekend to drop to 2-4 overall. The Aggies lost to UC Riverside 2-1 and lost to Stephen F. Austin 2-0.
Junior forward Layla Todd and senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol lead the Aggies with two goals apiece on seven attempts. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter has 18 saves and has started all six games for New Mexico State.
Wyoming hopes to improve its record against both schools. The Cowgirls are 2-4 all-time against the Wildcats and 0-1 against the Aggies. The last meeting between UW and Weber State was Aug. 26, 2012, when the Cowgirls came out on top with a 1-0 victory. On Sept. 26, 2010, Wyoming lost 2-1 to New Mexico State.
