Cowgirls Drop Match 3-0 against Lobos
LARAMIE, Wyo. (September 29, 2019) – The Wyoming soccer team (4-3-3, 1-1-0 MW) couldn’t overcome two first half goals and suffered a tough 3-0 loss against the New Mexico Lobos on Sunday afternoon in Laramie.
New Mexico came out aggressive to begin the game and really pushed the pace on its side of the field. They would put together a string of three early shots in the first ten minutes which came up empty. In the 12th minute, a ball off a direct kick by Gwen Maly reached around the wall and past goalie Hannah Lee to give the Lobos the 1-0 advantage. Wyoming got its first opportunity with 13:21 off a corner kick from sophomore Amber Vokoun but the shot by fellow sophomore Kennedy Schomer went wide. New Mexico had another two good looks over the next two minutes followed by chances by freshman Katelyn Barner and senior Summer Taube went wide. Late in the half, a corner kick by the Lobos gave Jessie Hix another look at the goal which was blocked. The ball would fumble around the front of the goal and come back to Hix who buried in to the back of the net extending the UNM lead 2-0. The Lobos had eight shots compared to three by the Cowgirls in the first 45 minutes of play.
It was tough going in the second half for the Cowgirls to get any momentum, while New Mexico continued its strong play. Wyoming had an early chance in the 47th minute with a shot by senior Michaela Stark that was saved by Maila Vanisi as was the Cowgirls only other shot of the half by sophomore Indianna Asimus was also saved by the goalie. The Lobos continued to push forward and had five shots over a ten minute span. With 77:12 on the clock, a shot by Jadyn Edwards was saved by sophomore Riley Furbush, but the second one would make it past to the back of the net to get the score to 3-0. Unfortunately, the clock and a strong Lobo defense shut the Cowgirls down by a final of 3-0.
“I thought it was an ugly game. We came out soft, thought we got pushed around and didn’t have a lot of fight to us,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “Everything we did well on Friday, we didn’t do today. There are no excuses for that and not a Wyoming soccer performance. Disappointed in the effort and the fight we had today.”
Wyoming ended up being outshot by New Mexico 16-5 for the contest. Lee and Furbush each played 45 minutes and had a combined five total saves for UW. Vanisi was in net for UNM, and she made two saves in 90 minutes. The Cowgirls had three corner kicks to New Mexico’s five, and UW committed more fouls, nine to eight.
The Cowgirls will be out on the road for the first time in league play with two contests. They will face the Air Force Falcons on Friday night followed by an afternoon affair with Colorado College on Sunday. Friday’s match is set for 6:00 p.m. MT while Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m. Both are to be played in Colorado Springs.
