Cowgirls Open Mountain West Play with 3-0 Win over Colorado State

Held Rams to two shots for second shutout of season

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Sept. 29, 2013) -- After suffering a hard fought loss to No. 14 Portland on Friday night, the University of Wyoming women’s soccer team bounced back in its Mountain West Conference opener with a 3-0 victory over Border War rival Colorado State on Sunday in Fort Collins, Colo. The Cowgirl defense dominated the match from start to finish, limiting the Rams to one shot each period.

Wyoming (4-6-1, 1-0-0) had plenty of chances early on and dictated the first half on the offensive side of the ball which saw them hold a 4-1 shot advantage over CSU (1-6-2, 0-2-0) going into halftime. With scores from freshman defender Sammi Dunda in the 10th minute, senior forward Lucie McDowell in the 69th minute and sophomore midfielder Mollee Ramsay in the 74th, the UW defense did the rest to capture their second shutout of the season.

McDowell and Ramsay led the Cowgirls with two shots apiece, while Dunda, senior midfielder Liz O’Reilly and freshmen forward Laurel Ramer each added one shot. Wyoming took three shots during the second stanza, scoring twice. Junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm recorded her second career shutout behind two saves in goal. The Rams were able to take the advantage in corner kicks with two compared to zero for the Cowgirls.

Dunda set the tone for Wyoming and scored first, which proved to be her first career goal as she took her shot from the top of the box and fired the ball into the top corner of the net.  In the 69th minute, McDowell broke through and doubled the Cowgirls’ lead as she found the rebound off a Wyoming free kick to push the ball past CSU’s keeper. It marked McDowell’s team leading sixth goal of the year. UW added an insurance goal in the 74th minute when sophomore Mollee Ramsay scored her third goal of the season off a free kick from junior midfielder Loren Mahoney with McDowell serving as the catalyst as she was able to head the ball to Ramsay before her shot.

Wyoming will be back in action Friday when they travel to Boise State for a 4 p.m. kickoff and then battle Utah State at 1 p.m. Sunday in Logan, Utah.
