Cowgirls Shut Out in MW Opener, 1-0
Boise, Idaho (Sept. 23, 2016) – UW soccer was held scoreless at Boise State on Friday night, as the Broncos claimed the 1-0 win at the Boas Soccer and Tennis Complex in Boise.
Wyoming (4-4-1) outshot the Broncos 16-to-11, but could not find a way to put one in the back of the net. Junior forward Shaina Ashouri led the Cowgirls with five shots. Despite the shooting advantage, UW was held to a season-low two shots on goal.
Boise State (2-7-1) netted the game-winner in the 21st minute when Kayla Tucker played a long ball up to Raimee Sherle, who poked it past junior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree. The goal was Sherle’s second of the year, and ended an eight-match winless streak for the home squad.
“Boise State came out and played extremely physical, and it took our team awhile to step up and match that physicality,” said head coach Pete Cuadrado. “Once we did, I thought we had a ton of great chances but unfortunately Boise State put one away. I thought we responded really well, but we have to be able to come out right away and match the intensity.”
Friday’s game marked the first time this season that Boise State shut out its opponent. Shaina Ashouri led the Cowgirls in shots for the fifth-consecutive contest. Sophomore defender Alyssa Murray played a complete 90 minutes for the first time this season, along with Rowntree and junior defender Alisha Bass. Wyoming is now 7-3-1 all-time against the Broncos.
