Cowgirls Start Regular Season
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Aug. 22, 2014) – Coming off an exhibition win, the University of Wyoming women’s soccer team opens the 2014 regular season this weekend.
The slate
The Cowgirls begin on the road with a battle versus Kansas August 22 at 6 p.m. MT Friday, with another matchup scheduled for Sunday August 24 at 1 p.m. MT against the University of Montana.
“The team and staff are looking forward to the challenges ahead this weekend,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “We hope to see a large crowd on Sunday for our home opener vs. Montana.”
UW opened the 2014 campaign with an exhibition win over Colorado School of Mines 5-1 last Saturday.
Last time against the Jayhawks
The last time these squads met was in Aug. 29, 1999 with UW beating Kansas by a 1-0 margin. The Cowgirls trail in the all-time series 1-0-2.
Kansas was picked to finish sixth in the Big 12 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. In 2013, Kansas went 7-11-2 and returns nine starters to the field: Tayler Estrata, Jamie Fletcher, Aurelie Gagnet, Hanna Kallmaier, Liana Salazar, Ashley Williams, Caroline Van Slambrouck and Hayley Yearout.
Last time against the Griz
The Cowgirls tied Montana 0-0 on Aug. 25, 2013 in Missoula, Mont. The Cowgirls and Griz played two overtimes knotted at 0-0, which proved to be the final score. The Cowgirls had 17 shots on goal, but saw none find the back of the net. UW was led with four shots by Mollee Ramsay, while Mandy Meyer and Sammie Dunda shot twice on goal. Alison Clarke and Kasey Curtis added one shot each on goal.
Montana soccer team was picked fifth in the Big Sky Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Montana was 7-8-4 overall in 2013 and returns six starters to the field: Tyler Adair, Mackenzie Akins, Tess Brenneman, Jenna Castillo, Brooke Moody and Jamie Simon.
