Cowgirls Take Down SDSU, 3-2, in MW Opener
LARAMIE, Wyo. (September 27, 2019) – Three different Cowgirls found the back of the net in Wyoming’s win over San Diego State, 3-2, on Friday afternoon. The Cowgirls (4-2-3, 1-0-0 MW) scored all three goals in the second half and held off the Aztecs’ (1-6-1, 0-1-0 MW) late push to open Mountain West play with a home victory.
The Cowgirls had the first opportunity of the match when Savannah Warner’s header went high off a corner kick. It was the first of three first-half shots for Wyoming. However, the Aztecs had the better of possession in the opening frame, taking seven shots in the first 45 minutes, with three of them on goal. Hannah Lee was strong in net, stopping each SDSU attack, including a diving stop in the 12th minute. The teams entered the halftime break in a scoreless tie.
It took less than five minutes into the second half for Wyoming to strike. The Cowgirls earned a corner kick, and Amber Vokoun’s cross found Summer Taube, who outjumped the Aztecs and scored a header at the 49:20 mark. Three minutes later, Jamie Tatum stole the ball from an Aztec defender, dribbled around the keeper and calmly slipped the ball into the back of the net with 52:36 showing on the clock. With just under 11 minutes to play, Michaela Stark outran a defender for a loose ball, muscled past another Aztec, and then found the top corner to cap an impressive individual effort with a goal to make it 3-0 for the Cowgirls at the 79:46 mark.
But the Aztecs would not go down easily. Rachelle Elve found Darcy Weiser on the left side, and she slid the ball past Riley Furbush at the 81:35 mark of the match. Less than a minute later, SDSU struck again. This time, Chloe Frisch played a through ball to Taylor Moorehead, and Moorehead scored into the right corner, making it 3-2 with 82:27 played in the match. Wyoming held off SDSU’s late pushes, including a corner kick with 21 seconds to play to preserve the lead and take the victory.
“I thought we executed our game plan really well. We created some good chances in the first half and had two great crosses that we got on the end of but couldn’t get the shot off quick enough,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “We scored on a corner, which you are always deadly on those. Jamie (Tatum) has had those opportunities so it was great to see her get around the keeper and bury it. It was a gritty performance and that’s a good team. San Diego State never bad and kudos to them for battling and getting after us. We did what we needed to do to come away with the win and I’m proud of the team’s performance.”
Wyoming ended up being outshot by San Diego State, 18-6, but the Cowgirls made the most of their opportunities. Lee and Furbish each played 45 minutes and each made three saves for UW. Brooke Lisowski was in net for SDSU, and she made one save in 90 minutes. The Cowgirls had four corner kicks to San Diego State’s eight, and UW committed more fouls, nine to six.
Wyoming returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 29, when they host New Mexico at 1 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
