Cowgirls Take Utah State to the Wire, Fall 1-0
Today’s match marked the fourth 1-0 decision this season
Logan, Utah (Oct. 6, 2013) -- The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team had Utah State on its heels, but allowed an early second half goal to drop a 1-0 decision on the road on Sunday afternoon at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field in Logan, Utah. Nine of Wyoming’s 13 matches this season have been decided by one goal, as today’s match marked the fourth 1-0 decision for the Cowgirls.
“I thought we played one of our better games,” Wyoming head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “But we need to score goals and value our chances.”
A physical match from the first whistle, both Wyoming (4-8-1, 1-2 MW) and Utah State (6-4-2, 2-1 MW) had good chances in the first half but were unable to capitalize and put any points on the board. The Cowgirls and Aggies defenses were determined to be disruptive, not letting plays develop in its entirety and making sure nothing came easy. At the end of the first 45 minutes, with the score tied 0-0, Wyoming held a 7-1 lead in shots.
The Aggies came out firing in the second half and controlled most of the run of play in the second stanza outshooting UW, 9-3. The game winner and lone goal of the match was scored in the 52nd minute by Utah State’s senior forward Jennifer Flynn. Junior midfielder Lexie Morgan found Flynn who took control from midfield on a breakaway to dribble past the Wyoming defense and take a shot from 14 yards out that got past UW’s junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm. It was Flynn’s third goal of the season.
Senior forward Lucie McDowell, junior forward Sara Paul and junior midfielder Alison Clarke led the Cowgirls with two shots apiece. While senior forward Olivia Mohtadi, sophomore midfielder Mollee Ramsay, sophomore forward Jennifer Paul and freshman forward Laurel Ramer each recorded one shot for during the match.
For the match, Wyoming and Utah State finished with 10 shots, with the Aggies taking the advantage in corner kicks, 7-5. Boehm played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with three saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Jeannie Woller had four saves for Utah State in the net.
The Cowgirls will begin a four-match homestand and return to Mountain West action on Friday afternoon against New Mexico at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. MT.
