Cowgirls win 1-0 in Double-Overtime
Freshman forward Kaitlyn Lomsnes notched the game-winning goal in the 104th minute on Sunday at Boise State to propel the University of Wyoming women's soccer team to a 1-0 double-overtime win over the Broncos at the Boas Soccer Complex. The victory moves the Cowgirls to 3-1-0 in the Mountain West for second in the conference standings.
"It was definitely a hard-fought victory," UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "The girls played very well and executed the game plan. We created lots of chances and it was nice to land one in the end for the win."
Lomsnes notched her third goal this season on a put back. Sophomore defender Sammi Dunda served a cross that was knocked down by the BSU keeper, but not collected. Lomsnes was there to put the ball in the back of the net from nine yards out for UW's first overtime victory this season.
The Cowgirls outshot the Broncos 19-11, including 7-4 in shots on goal and 4-2 in corner kicks. Lomsnes and freshman midfielder Alisha Bass accumulated four shots each, while freshman forward Candace Scriberras posted a team-high five shots and directed two on goal. Senior goalkeeper Alex Boehm had four saves for her second individual shutout of the season and sixth individual shutout of her career.
Wyoming created many opportunities with 15 of their 19 shots during regulation, but couldn't seal the deal. The Cowgirl defense proved to be the difference in the game, allowing only eight shots to the Broncos in regulation and only three in both overtimes.
The Cowgirls return to their home pitch for a match on Friday against Colorado College at 3 p.m. MT and Sunday against Air Force at 1 p.m. Friday will be Wyoming's "Kick Out Cancer" where fans wearing pink will receive free admission to the match. Sunday's match will be "Wyoming Soccer Day" where all Laramie and Cheyenne youth soccer players wearing their uniforms will receive free admission with the option to scrimmage at halftime and a free petting zoo.
