LYNCHBURG, Va. – A goal in the ninth minute of play from sophomore MacKenzie Cowley proved to be the gamewinner as the GW women’s soccer team defeated Liberty, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Osborne Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia. 

With a win over the Lady Flames (2-3), the Colonials are now 4-0 for the first time in program history with four consecutive shutout victories. It also marks the first win over the reigning Big South Champions and NCAA tournament qualifiers in three meetings between the two squads.

Cowley netted the gamewinner on GW’s first shot of the game 8:46 into action as she chipped the ball over Liberty goalkeeper’s Holly Van Noord’s head from the top right corner of the box to put the Colonials on the scoreboard.

Despite Liberty taking 17 shots throughout the match with five of those attempts on target, the combination of the Buff and Blue’s vigorous backline along with redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn thwarted all of them. GW fired nine shots on the afternoon, including two from Cowley, and forced Van Noord to make four saves. Horn's five saves between the posts for GW were enough for her fourth win of the season.

GW looks to remain unblemished when it returns home to the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Friday, Sept. 12 to host East Tennessee State for a 3 p.m. contest.
