Creighton Extends Streaks in 3-0 Win Over Providence
OMAHA, Neb. - The third-ranked Creighton men's soccer team knocked off visiting Providence 3-0 on a wet Saturday night at Morrison Stadium Saturday to remain perfect on the season. The Bluejays have now won each of their first six matches via shutout, snapping the Friars' own five-match winning streak and four-match shutout streak on the way to matching their best start since 2000. The six straight Bluejay shutouts tie the school record set in 2008.
Showing an early urgency on the attack paid immediate dividends for the Bluejays (6-0-0) as they were awarded a penalty kick just 3:35 into the match when Dion Acoff was taken down inside the box after settling a perfect feed from Jose Gomez on a forward run. All-American Ethan Finlay stepped forward to take the PK attempt and tucked it in for his third goal of the season and the Jays never looked back.
A corner kick in the 13th minute resulted in Greg Jordan's second diving header goal of the season and the Jays were up 2-0. A fantastic serve from Bruno Castro on the corner kick connected with the head of a diving Jordan for the score.
"We wanted to come out different, no matter what the conditions," said first-year Creighton head coach Elmar Bolowich talking about how aggressive his team played in the opening minutes. "We wanted to be a little more energetic, we wanted to bring the heat right away and decide the game early with goals."
Creighton took that 2-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Friars 7-3 in the opening half. Two of the shots by Providence (5-2-0) worked their way on goal, but were turned away by the MVC and CU career leader in shutouts, Brian Holt.
Finlay added a pretty insurance tally in the 76th minute, as he settled a perfectly placed ball from Castro with his chest and volleyed it to the left of a diving Jhojan Obando in goal for Providence. The goal was Finlay's 33rd of his career and it marked the seventh two-goal match of his career, the second one this season. Finlay also notched his 16th career game-winning goal in the victory. He now tops the team with four goals and 11 points this season.
The sixth straight shutout for CU tied a school-record which the 2008 team, led by a freshman Holt in goal, originally established. The Bluejays had not started 6-0-0 since the 2000 team did so. That squad led the NCAA with 22 wins and played in the NCAA Championship match.
Holt, who finished with two saves in his 32nd career shutout, has now played 539 scoreless minutes in goal this season and has not allowed a goal in his last 559:47 played, the third longest streak in school history. (He owns the school record of 722:12.)
Creighton will look to continue its impressive start when it hosts Kentucky on Wednesday at Morrison Stadium for a 7 pm kickoff.
