Creighton Posts 1-0 Win at SIU Edwardsville
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The sixth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team posted a 1-0 win in its final regular-season road match of the season at SIU Edwardsville Saturday night. Sophomore Brent Kallman scored his first career goal in the 36th minute and senior goalkeeper Brian Holt helped the Bluejay defense to its 11th clean sheet in 15 matches, as a pair of Creighton shots late in the match hit the post and the Bluejays outshot the Cougars 20-8.
The win was Creighton's second 1-0 triumph on the MVC road this week, improving to 2-1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play and 13-2-0 overall. The loss for SIUE dropped the Cougars to 1-3-1 in MVC action and 7-6-3 on the season.
The Bluejays used the same formula they used in their 1-0 win at Bradley on Wednesday, scoring late in the first half to take control of the match, while continuing to pound the opponent with shots throughout the second half. For the second straight match and the third time this season, the Bluejays finished with at least 20 shots. With 11 shots on goal, the Bluejays fell just one shy of their season high.
Creighton used a set piece to deliver the game's only goal in the 36th minute. Bruno Castro sent a short corner to Kris Clark, who touched it back to Castro. The sophomore then sent a perfectly placed crossing pace to the middle, where Kallman out-jumped the SIUE defense and headed in the first goal of his career at the 35:26 mark. The assist was Castro's team leading seventh of the season, while it served as Clark's first point of the year.
After outshooting the Cougars 7-4 in the first half, the Bluejays dominated possession in the second half, peppering SIUE goalkeeper Scott Meyer throughout the final 45 minutes. The second half was played predominantly in Creighton's attacking third, but the Bluejays could never add the insurance goal they were looking for. After SIUE attempted the first three shots of the second half, CU outshot the home team 13-1 over the remainder of the match.
In the 56th minute, Meyer stopped a Greg Jordan blast and Ethan Finlay had an open net on the rebound, but sent his shot high. Clark hit the post in the 75th minute and a shot by Jose Ribas in the 86th minute was deflected by Meyer and then hit the post to keep the score 1-0.
SIUE may have had its best scoring chance late in the match as Jack Twellman sent a header shot wide as Holt was attempting to punch the pass away in the 87th minute.
Holt finished with two saves in his 10th solo shutout of the year and CU's 11th clean sheet. The senior now has 37 career shutouts, extending his own CU and MVC record.
Meyer made 10 saves in goal for the Cougars.
The win was Creighton's seventh 1-0 victory of the season, a school record for 1-0 triumphs. Of CU's 13 wins, 11 have come via shutout.
After playing six of its last seven matches on the road, Creighton returns home for its final three matches of the regular-season, hosting three MVC contests at Morrison Stadium before then playing host to the MVC Tournament during the second week of November. CU hosts Drake (10-5-1, 3-1-0 MVC) on Wednesday at 7 pm.
