CSU Bakersfield defeats Drake 2-1
DES MOINES, Iowa—Sam Peña (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) scored two goals including the gamewinner with 6:14 remaining to lead CSU Bakersfield (3-9-1) past Drake (3-7-4) 2-1 in women’s soccer action at the Cownie Complex Sunday afternoon.
Peña opened the scoring when she beat Bulldogs’ goalie Kalena Litch on a 1-on-1 breakaway in the 11th minute. Drake tied the score seven minutes later when Paige Dusek scored. Peña put home the gamewinner when she again won a 1-on-1 against Litch.
"We have often found our results at the mercy of finishing our opportunities," said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. "There have been numerous game in which we have had wide open looks and would have had a few more wins had we been able to convert like we did today."
CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field Friday night as part of a doubleheader with the Roadrunner men’s soccer program. The women’s soocer team hosts Seattle University at 5 p.m. with the men hosting Sacramento State in MPSF action at approximately 7 p.m.
