CSU Bakersfield Rallies From Behind To Defeat Oregon State 2-1
CORVALLIS, Ore.--CSU Bakersfield rallied from behind to defeat Oregon State 2-1 in the final match of the Oregon State Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic Sunday afternoon. The victory allowed the Roadrunners to earn the tournament title.
The Beavers' (2-5) Mike Reckmeyer gave Oregon State a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. Chris Widdy (Sr., San Pedro, Calif., San Pedro Senior HS) put home an Ernesto Hinjosa (Jr., Tustin, Calif., Tustin HS) rebound in the 32nd minute to tie the match up at 1-1.
The Beavers threatened 1:32 in the second half when Oregon State's Will Seymore was awarded a penalty kick. CSUB goalie Eric Shannon (Jr., Valencia, Calif., Valencia HS) made the save. The rebound came out with Daniel Van Vleet's chip shot attempt going high.
Hinjosa gave the Roadrunners (4-0-3) the lead when he scored off a scramble in front at 56:22. Jesus Sanchez (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Castle Park HS) was credited with the assist on the play.
"Today wasn't our prettiest performance," said CSUB head coach Simon Tobin. "We needed a gritty display. This is our first tournament win at the Division I level and I am very proud of my team."
The Roadrunners head to Cal State Fullerton Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
