DALLAS, Texas.-Ernesto Hinojosa (Sr., Tustin, Calif., Tustin HS) scored the equalizer in the 88th minute from 25 yards out as CSUB (2-1-4) overcame a man-down disadvantage to earn a 1-1 tie at SMU's Westcott Field Thursday night.
In a game peppered with fouls and cautions, CSUB played the final 17 minutes of regulation and the final 37 minutes of the match a man down following a red card issued to Lucas Dall'Orso (So., Orange County, Calif., Serra Catholic HS) in the 73rd minute of the match.
The 'Runners however continued to attack managing to outshoot the Mustangs 27-16 in the match including a 10-5 shots on goal advantage for the Roadrunners. Gyasi Zardes (Jr., Hawthorne, Calif., Leuzinger HS), had six shots for the 'Runners including four on goal.
Despite playing the final 37 minutes a man down, CSUB controlled the two extra periods nearly netting the game-winner when Hinojosa was awarded a penalty kick following a foul by SMU goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra in the 107th minute. Ibarra managed to turn the shot away when Hinojosa went left with the try.
"We were down 1-0 down and one player down but managed to fight back," said head coach Simon Tobin. "We missed a penalty with three minutes to go in overtime to win the game so I have mixed feelings about the result. A gritty performance against a team that have won their last four games."
Andrew Morales scored the goal for SMU on a penalt kick in the 43rd minute. That lead would last until Hinojosa's game-tying shot in the 88th minute. SMU is now 4-2-2 on the season
CSUB continues their road trip on Sunday heading to No. 19 UC Riverside (7-0). Game time for that match is 7 P.M.
