Cyclones Advance To CSAC Championship
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Second-seeded Centenary College needed penalty kicks to decide its Colonial States Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal match with No. 3 Cabrini after playing to a 2-2 draw and the Cyclones prevailed 6-5 to advance to Saturday's championship match.
Centenary enters its first-ever appearance in the CSAC Tournament championship riding a nine-match unbeaten streak. The Cyclones will visit regular-season champion Marywood, which downed Neumann 3-1 in the semifinals, on Saturday with an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament on the line.
Senior Antonio Cabrera (Pasadena, Texas/Pasadena) delivered the decided penalty kick on the Cyclones' eighth attempt.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) stopped the first two penalty kicks he faced as CC grabbed a 2-0 advantage; however, Cabrini rallied to knot the count 3-3 after five PKs. Sophomore Glenn Brennen (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) and senior Nick Telle (Roselle, N.J./Roselle Catholic) both connected on their ensuing kicks, as did both Cavalier shooters, before Goleman came up big, blocking Sean Neary's shot. Cabrera stepped up next and drilled a kick into the corner of the net to seal the match for the Cyclones.
Freshman Luis Marin (Union City, N.J./Union Hill) helped push the game into overtime as he blasted a long shot past Cabrini goalkeeper Eric Nowicki to knot the match at 2-2 with under five minutes remaining in regulation.
Prior to Marin's goal, the Cavaliers had seized the match's momentum with a pair of second-half goals. A.J. Bishop's diving header tied the game at one before Bobby Kane used a header of his own to give Cabrini the lead.
The Cyclones had grabbed a first-half lead when sophomore Sean Robinson (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) scored his fourth goal of the year at the 39:41 mark.
CC and Marywood will be facing off for the second time this season. The Pacers claimed a 2-1 victory in Hackettstown on Oct. 2, handing Centenary its only conference loss. Game time for the championship match is set for 1:00 pm.
