Cyclones Improve To 2-0 On Season
MADISON, N.J. (September 2, 2012) - The Centenary College men’s soccer team looked to maintain their winning ways today, taking on FDU Florham in Madison, NJ. The Cyclones came out strong for the first 15 minutes of the match, creating multiple chances for Quinn Khouri (Eldersburg, Md, Liberty) forcing FDU Florham’s keeper to make great saves.
After that early confidence for the Cyclones momentum turned in FDU favor after keeper Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, PA, Taylor Allderdice) turned away a header just tipping it over the crossbar. FDU continued the momentum through the half creating more chances, but all were saved by Goleman, keeping the game scoreless entering the half.
During halftime, Coach O'Connor pleaded with his team, "to bring back the play of the first 15 minutes, look to move the ball, and continue to pressure high on their outside backs."
As the half got under way, the Cyclones were again under heavy pressure from a different looking FDU team then they saw in the first half. Looking to keep the play on the Cyclones half, FDU pushed on, sending men forward to create chances. However, everything was turned away Goleman, even making a one on one save to preserve the clean sheet. Finally, breaking through on the left flank, FDU's Ryan Hurdes found the back of the net at 73:29.
Now looking to rally, the Cyclones finally started to move the ball again and put FDU under pressure. Winning a deep throw, Patrick Bourland (Vienna, NJ, Hackettstown) look to get the ball into the box for any opportunity. A good challenge from Quinn Khouri saw the ball drop for Jack Kim (Hackettstown, N.J., ChangWon) who pounced on the ball to put it into the back of the net at 76:40.
Momentum back in the Cyclones favor, they kept up the high pressure forcing a quick turnover off the kick-off. With that possession Centenary quickly moved the ball through the midfield with good combinations. Seeing an overlapping run by Bourland, who then crossed the ball finding Alex Khouri (Eldersburg, Md, Liberty) for the second goal just thirty seconds later. The Cyclones now in the lead 2-1, FDU pushed high, but to no avail as the Cyclones would go on to take home the victory and improve to a 2-0 start on the season.
The Cyclones bounce back to action on Saturday when they travel to St. Mary’s City to take part in the 2012 Seahawk Classic.
