Cyclones Ride Big Second Half Past Cairn
LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Centenary College women's soccer team scored three times in a 13-minute span of the second half en route to a 4-1 Colonial States Athletic Conference triumph over Cairn on Wednesday afternoon.
Centenary, which dominated control of the game with a 39-2 advantage in shots, improved to 5-2-1 in league play and 5-7-2 overall, while the Highlanders dropped to 4-9-2 (1-5-2 CSAC).
The Cyclones got on the board first in the 17th minute as junior Samantha Sysak (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) deposited her fifth goal of the fall. Cairn rallied to knot the score 20 minutes later when Kathleen Meachem fired a shot just inside the post.
The second half belonged to the Cyclones, who dominated play, scoring three times in just under 13 minutes. Junior Cara Holmes (Pittstown, N.J./North Hunterdon) was hauled down in the box and connected on her ensuing penalty kick to help Centenary retake the lead.
Classmate Laura Potter (Gilboa, N.Y./Gilboa-Conesville) added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute off a feed from sophomore Lorraine Dedrick (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), while an own goal by Cairn accounted for the final tally.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Williams (Glenside, Pa./Abington) needed to make just one stop for CC, while Naomi Collipp kept Cairn in the game with 19 saves.
The Cyclones return home on Saturday for Senior Day against Cabrini beginning at 1:00 pm.
