D’Alfonso’s Hat Trick Treats Saints to Win
Senior captain Taylor D’Alfonso netted her first career hat trick as Siena posted a 3-1 win in the regular season finale at Manhattan. The Saints will be the No. 6 seed in next week’s MAAC Championships at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
D’Alfonso, who entered the match with two goals, doubled her season total in the first 17 minutes giving Siena (9-8-1, 5-4-1) a quick 2-0 lead. After Manhattan (5-12-1, 2-7-1) halved the score in the 40th minute, D’Alfonso put the match away with her third goal in the 58th minute.
Fellow captain Brittany Pfaff, who herself tallied a hat trick earlier this season against Vermont, assisted on two of D’Alfonso’s three goals. Pfaff enters the MAAC Tournament as the conference’s leading scorer with 30 points – the third highest single-season total in Siena history.
Siena, which with the win assured itself of a .500 or better finish for the first time in three years, out-shot Manhattan 17-11 and held a 5-1 advantage in corners. Taylor Booth made five saves to earn the win in goal.
Erica Modena scored the Jaspers goal and Maria Sanzari (one save) and Kristen Skonieczny (four saves) split time in goal.
The Saints begin their quest for the program’s second MAAC Championship Thursday at 11 a.m. against 11th seeded Saint Peter’s. Siena shutout the Peacocks 2-0 on Sept. 28 in Loudonville.
