Dartmouth Blanks Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Dartmouth had a pretty substantial edge in play in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Yale Saturday at Reese Stadium. Still, the Bulldogs couldn’t help but wonder what might have been as they walked off the field.

Yale had a couple of great opportunities to score but couldn’t capitalize.

The best chance was a penalty kick for Melissa Gavin with just over six minutes remaining. Gavin, who leads the Bulldogs with seven goals, seemed to hesitate for just a second on her approach and her shot went just wide.

“I would bet my house that she would make that,” said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. “So I guess I would be homeless.”

That wasn’t the only good chance for the Bulldogs (5-5, 1-2 Ivy). In the final seconds, Paula Hagopian found herself alone at the side of the net, but her hard shot went just wide.

Earlier in the half, Juliann Jeffrey got off a shot from 15 yards out that deflected off the post.

“We had two or three golden chances,” Meredith said. “To our credit, we kept fighting.”

Dartmouth (5-4-2, 2-1-0 Ivy) finished with a 26-10 edge in shots.

Goalkeeper Rachel Ames kept the Bulldogs in the game. She made a season-high nine saves.

The Big Green scored the only goal of the game with nine minutes left in the first half when Emma Brush headed a Corey Delaney cross off the post and in.

Yale was outshot 19-4 in the first half, but was better over the next 45 minutes.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Monday when they play at Marist. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
