Dartmouth Extends Win Streak to Three
HANOVER, N.H.– Two first-half goals from Emma Brush (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) and Chrissy Lozier (Fairfield, Conn.) led the Dartmouth women’s soccer team to a 5-0 win over NJIT on Thursday night at Burnham Field.
The win is Dartmouth’s third consecutive shutout and is Dartmouth’s largest margin of victory since taking a 7-0 win over Vermont during the 2010 season. The Big Green hasn’t allowed a goal in the last 270:00 of action and has outscored opponents, 11-0.
Dartmouth (5-2-0) set the tone of the contest from the kickoff barely allowing NJIT (2-7-2) into the offensive zone. Big Green leading scorer, Brush, opened the scoring in the 17th minute. She connected with a corner kick from Libby Hamlin (Vernon, Conn.) and drilled it into the corner to give the Big Green the early advantage.
Dartmouth tallied 19 of its season-high 30 shots in the first half and was led by Brush who tallied a game-high seven shots while Lozier added five shots. In total, 13 of the 24 players who saw time on the field tallied at least one shot.
Lozier picked up her fourth goal of the season and her third goal via her head at the 23:05 mark. With the ball bouncing around in the box, Lozier got her head on a ball in the far right corner and sent it past NJIT goalkeeper, Samantha Bersett, to give the Big Green a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Goalkeeper Tatiana Saunders (Rye, N.Y.) and the Big Green backline maintained a clean scoresheet for the third consecutive game and for the second consecutive game, Saunders didn’t make a save. The Big Green backline was able to dominate the NJIT offense and won all of the defensive 1 vs. 1 battles in the backfield.
Dartmouth also utilized its new formation to move the ball up the sidelines culminating with crosses into the box. Nearly each one of Dartmouth’s scoring chances were a direct result of a crossing situation.
Dartmouth extended its lead in the 66th minute with Brush’s second goal of the game. She connected with a ball in the box from reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, Corey Delaney (Chatham, N.J.), and headed it into the back netting.
Dartmouth’s reserves continued the scoring for the Big Green in the second frame. Allison Yeager (North Potomac, Md.) tallied her first goal of the season while freshman Lucielle Kozlov (Vancouver, British Columbia) scored her first collegiate goal. Senior defender Grace Best (Downington, Pa.) tallied two assists on both of those goals -- her first points of the season.
Freshman Jill Dayneka (Solon, Ohio) made her collegiate debut while Ari Kenyon (Hanover, Mass.) made her season debut in the contest.
Dartmouth opens Ivy League action on Sunday (Sept. 23) when they welcome Brown to Burnham Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
