Dartmouth Men Tie No. 11 South Florida, 3-3, in 2OT

September 11, 2011

HANOVER, N.H.- The Dartmouth men's soccer team used a goal from sophomore midfielder Patrick Murray (Lakewood, Ohio) to force overtime, but the Big Green couldn't find the game winner and settled for a 3-3 double overtime tie with No. 11 South Florida on Sunday at Burnham Field. The game concluded the annual Dartmouth Classic and gave the Big Green a 1-0-1 record for the weekend.

Senior captains Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) and Nick Pappas (Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned Offensive and Defensive Most Valuable Player honors, while Bradley's Brian Billings was named Most Valuable Goalkeeper.

Murray provided the late game heroics for Dartmouth (1-1-2) in the 89th minute of action.  Following an offsides call on South Florida with just 2:01 remaining in regulation, the Big Green moved the ball up the field and into the South Florida box. There was a battle to get the ball from both sides and Murray connected with a short pass from Pappas for the equalizer to force overtime.

Mkosana and freshman midfielder Robin Alnas (Gothenburg, Sweden) led the Dartmouth offense with three shots while Mkosana posted a team-best three point afternoon with a goal and an assist. Playing in his second double overtime game this season, goalkeeper Noah Cohen (Johannesburg, South Africa) made three saves in 110 minutes of action in the net.

The Big Green took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break behind first-half goals from Mkosana and freshman forward Alex Adelabu (Houston, Texas), but it was South Florida that opened the scoring with a goal in the eighth minute of action from leading scorer, Dom Dwyer.

Dartmouth responded with its first goal of the game just over a minute later with Mkosana's second goal of the season.  Junior midfielder Kevin Dzierzawski (Oakland Township, Mich.) passed the ball to senior midfielder Aaron Gaide (Avon, Conn.) who placed it perfectly for Mkosana to head to the ball just behind the reach of South Florida goalkeeper, Chris Blais.

The Big Green took the lead on a goal from Adelabu in the 24th minute of action. The Houston native took advantage of a USF miscue in the box and hit a hard struck ball into the right corner to give Dartmouth the 2-1 halftime advantage.

In a physical game, South Florida managed to tie the game on a defensive breakdown in the 53rd minute and took a 3-2 lead in the 78th minute with Dwyer's second goal of the afternoon.

Dartmouth hits the road for the next two games when they travel to Dallas, Texas for a tournament hosted by Southern Methodist University. The Big Green will take on host SMU on Friday (Sept. 16) before concluding tournament action against Tulsa on Sunday (Sept. 18).
