Dartmouth Men's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw at Harvard

October 29, 2011

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Junior midfielder Kevin Dzierzawski (Oakland Township, Mich.) scored Dartmouth's lone goal in a 1-1 (2OT) tie at Harvard on Saturday (Oct. 29) afternoon.

Dzierzawski's four shots led the Dartmouth (7-4-3, 3-1-1 Ivy League) offense in the contest. Senior captains Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) and Nick Pappas (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and freshman forward Patrick Murray (Lakewood, Ohio) each registered two shots in the tie.

Dzierzawski gave the Big Green the early advantage with his third goal of the season in the 24th minute of action.  The midfielder collected the ball and took the space the Harvard defense gave him and ripped a shot from 25 yards out that was tipped into the goal by a Harvard defender.

Harvard answered the Dartmouth score in the 31st minute in a goal from Hiroki Kobayashi. Kobayashi connected on a long pass from teammate Eric Slingerland, which he tipped just past Dartmouth goalkeeper, Noah Cohen (Johannesburg, South Africa).

For the second consecutive game, Cohen was a brick wall for the Dartmouth defense.  The sophomore made seven saves in his third overtime contest of the season.

Dartmouth picked up the offensive pressure late in the first half and tallied three shots in the closing minutes of the half. Dzierzawski had a shot that was saved by Harvard goalkeeper Austin Harms while teammates Mkosana and Colin Skelly (Wrightstown, Pa.) had shots go wide.

Both teams had opportunities to break the stalemate in the second half. Harvard, just five minutes into the second half, had a shot hit the post while Pappas had a header shot saved minutes later.

Despite Harvard outshooting the Big Green, 17-13, for the contest, the Crimson couldn't unlock the Dartmouth defense as both teams settled for the tie.

In the first overtime session, Harvard controlled the run of play with three quick shots in the first five minutes but the Dartmouth defense held forcing the second overtime. The second overtime wasn't productive for either team, with only two shots registered en route to Dartmouth's third tie of the season.

The Big Green hit the road for a game at in-state rival, New Hampshire on Tuesday (Nov. 1). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Durham.
