Dartmouth Women Fall to Columbia 2-1
HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman forward Tasha Wilkins(Portland, Ore.) scored her team-leading third goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Dartmouth women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 contest to Columbia at Burnham Field on Saturday.
Columbia, who trailed for most of the second half, tied the game on a goal in the 83rd minute and scored the game-winner in the 90th minute to give Dartmouth just its second home loss of the season. Wilkins almost picked up her second goal of the night in the 84th minute on a header shot that went ever so slightly wide of the net, but the Columbia defense held for the win.
Wilkins gave Dartmouth (3-11-0, 1-4-0 Ivy League) the early advantage after connecting with a pass from sophomore defender Kelly Brait (Glenview, Ill.) out of the back just before the end of the first half. Once Wilkins got the ball on her foot, she had a straight shot to goal and put the ball just behind Columbia goalkeeper, Lillian Klein.
Wilkins led the Dartmouth offense with three shots, including two that reached the frame. Senior midfielder Ally Dutton (Granite Bay, Calif.) also added two shots for the Big Green while freshman goalkeeper Tatiana Saunders (Rye, N.Y.) made three saves on the evening. The Big Green held an 11-6 shot advantage in the contest and the teams each took just one corner kick on the night.
The Big Green held a 1-0 lead until the 83rd minute of the game when Columbia's Liz Wicks tied the game on a tap-in, in the Dartmouth box. Wicks would seal the win for the Lions in the 90th minute on another shot from inside the Dartmouth box.
Dartmouth will get back on the road when it travels to Ivy League foe, Harvard, on Saturday (Oct. 29). Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM at Harvard's Soldier Field Stadium.
