DAYTON CLINCHES A10 BERTH WITH WIN AT UMASS
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Dayton men's soccer team squared off against Massachusetts Friday afternoon and picked up a 3-0 win over the Minutemen.
It take long for the Flyers to get on the score sheet as freshman James Haupt gave Dayton a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute with his second goal of the season from three yards out. Senior John Howe and junior Greg Enstone provided the assists on the play.
In the 30th minute, senior defender Bastien Allheily doubled Dayton's advantage with a shot that deflected off a UMass defender and into the back of the net. The France native recorded his first goal of the season while junior Amass Amankona added an assist to his total.
At the half, it was a 2-0 Flyer lead despite being out-shot by the Minutemen 7-6. Dayton did have six of their seven attempts on goal though in the first 45 minutes.
Quickly into the second half, Enstone made it a three-goal Flyer lead with a tap-in goal on an assist by Haupt, who returned the favor from his earlier goal. With that Dayton had a commanding lead going into the late stages of the game. The goal was Enstone's seventh on the year and puts him in a tie with Abe Keller for the team lead.
The three-goal margin would eventually be more than enough for the Flyers to pick up their third win in four contests. The 3-0 victory also moved Dayton one step closer to solidifying its spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament next week.
Haupt, Allheily, and Enstone provided the goals for Dayton while Howe, Enstone, Amankona, and Haupt all recorded assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Froschauer picked up his eighth shutout of the season and had five saves to go along with the effort. The defensive back four had a stellar game for the Flyers as well.
Wins by La Salle over Fordham and VCU over St. Bonaventure Friday helped the Flyers clinch a postseason berth.
The Flyers (13-2-2, 3-2-2 A10) will finish up the regular season Sunday at Rhode Island. The contest is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET.
