DAYTON FALLS TO FORDHAM, 2-1
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 defeat at the hands of Fordham Sunday afternoon at Baujan Field.
Fordham was the more aggressive team from the start with a few opportunities that tested the back line for Dayton, but the Flyers back four and goalkeeper Chris Froschauer were holding strong.
In the 35th minute, the visitors had a cross into the box that was deflected by a Dayton defender, which was going into the goal before Froschauer knocked it out at the last second. The Rams were just inches from the opening goal, but Dayton continued to answer any questions the Fordham offense was asking.
At halftime, the score remained 0-0. The Flyers totaled four shots total while the Rams had six, two of which were on goal.
The second half had barely gotten underway when Fordham struck with just 30 seconds gone on a breakaway goal by Jannik Loebe. That put the Flyers in a 1-0 hole, but plenty of time remained in the game.
In the 63rd minute, Dayton managed a counterattack when junior Amass Amankona passed back to sophomore James Haupt who was waiting at the top of the 18-yard box. Haupt then drilled the shot low and to the near post for the tying goal. It was his fifth of the season and Amankona’s seventh assist.
Fordham would continue to press the tempo though and answered in the 71st minute with its second goal of the game. Ollie Kelly put the Rams up 2-1 with his first goal of the season.
Unfortunately, Dayton would not be able to score the equalizer and fell to Fordham by a final score of 2-1.
In the end, the Flyers finished with 10 shots, two of which were on goal, and allowed six shots on goal to Fordham. Froschauer recorded four saves in the game while Haupt provided the lone Dayton goal on the assist from Amankona.
Dayton and Fordham were equal with nine fouls each after UD went into halftime with seven fouls already.
The Flyers (6-5-5, 2-2-2 A-10) will head out on the road for the rest of the season as they travel to Philadelphia to take on La Salle and Saint Joseph’s next weekend.
