DAYTON WINS 2014 A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's soccer team (12-8-2) claimed the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship with a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over top-seeded La Salle (14-5-2) Sunday at Baujan Field in front of 1,238 fans.
With the win, the Flyers earn the A-10's automatic berth to the 2014 NCAA Championships. It marks the ninth A-10 Tournament title for UD, a league best. The NCAA Selection show will be held Monday, Nov. 10 at 4:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Five Flyers were named to the A-10 All-Championship team: freshman Alexis Kiehl, redshirt junior Heather Betancourt, junior Ashley Campbell, junior Nicole Waters and sophomore Erin O'Malley. O'Malley was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship.
La Salle held a 1-0 at half after striking in the third minute. Kelsey Haycook scored her 20th goal of the season on a header off a free kick from Paige McDowell.
O'Malley scored the equalizer in the 69th minute, also on a header on passes from Waters and Kiehl.
Junior Megan Herr scored her first goal of the season, and the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute on an assist from O'Malley.
Betancourt had four saves in goal for the Flyers and her overall record improves to 6-0-1.
The win over the Explorers is the first for the Flyers since Oct. 3, 2010.
