Delaware downs Stony Brook at JMU Tournament
Harrisonburg, Va. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team fell in the opening game of the James Madison Tournament on Friday, dropping a 3-0 decision against Delaware. Senior Dana Adamkiewicz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) led the team with three shots, while sophomore Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made six stops in net.
The Seawolves (1-1-0) attempted 13 shots in the match, but could not find the back of the net against Delaware (1-1-0) keeper Breanna Stemler, who made six stops for her first shutout of the season.
The Blue Hens produced two goals less than five minutes apart in the first half to take command of the match. Melissa Pennington scored the first of her two goals on the day in the 29th minute, taking a feed from Shannon Kearney and firing it home from 15 yards out. Kearney then set up the second goal in the 34th minute, supplying Tania Domingos, who slipped the ball past Morales and into the left corner of the net to make it 2-0.
Delaware tacked on a third at the 57:58 mark when Pennington converted a rebound off a shot by Taylor Thompson, and nearly added a fourth minutes later, but sophomore Julianne Palm (Stilwell, Kansas) made a defensive save to keep the deficit at three.
Despite trailing 3-0, the Seawolves continued to battle as sophomore Ahriel Fernandez (East Haven, Conn.) and Adamkiewicz fired shots at the net on the hour mark, but Stemler kept the ball out to preserve the scoreline.
Stony Brook will look to bounce back on Sunday against host James Madison. The match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
