August 19, 2012

NEWARK, Del. – Limited offensive chances by the University of Delaware women’s soccer team led to a 2-0 setback to Georgetown in Sunday afternoon’s 2012 season opener at Delaware Mini Stadium.

Georgetown’s Daphne Corboz tallied a first half goal and assisted on a second half tally in the Hoya victory. Georgetown, which opened its season with a 2-0 win over George Washington Friday, improved to 2-0 on the year.

Sophomore midfielder Andie Arnold led the Blue Hens (0-1) with four shots. “For the first time out I thought we played a really good game,” said Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda, who opened his 22nd season at the helm after leading the squad to a 10-7-4 mark and a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament semifinal appearance last fall . “You never like a result when it’s not in your favor, but the things that we did in practice were put in place in the game, which I thought was wonderful.”

Corboz punched in Georgetown’s first goal on an unassisted play about 20 yards out on the right side of the penalty box at the 12:14 mark in the first half.

The Hoyas, coming off the best season in school history in 2011 when they went 15-6, added a second goal in the second half at the 67:16 mark when Kaitlin Brenn put the ball in the net off Corboz’s pass in front of the UD goal.

Making her first career start for the Blue Hens, junior Jessica Levy, made three saves.

“I thought she had a great day,” said Grzenda. “After her first cross she came out and caught it like a champ and was fine from that point on.”

Georgetown goalkeeper, Emma Newins, posted her second-straight shutout of the 2012 season as she made three saves in the victory.

After being out-shot by the Hoyas in the first half, 6-1, the Blue Hens rallied in the second half by out-shooting Georgetown, 6-2.

The Blue Hens will continue their 2012 schedule on Friday, August 31 when they face their second straight Big East opponent, Seton Hall University. The match is set to start at 4 p.m. at SHU’s Owen T. Carroll’s Field.
