Delaware Stays Perfect in CAA with 1-0 Win
Delaware senior Anna Lenczyk’s second-half score gave the University of Delaware women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over UNCW in a Colonial Athletic Association match Sunday afternoon at UNCW’s Soccer Stadium
Delaware (7-4, 4-0) is riding a five-game winning streak while remaining unbeaten in CAA play as UNCW (7-5-1, 2-2) drops to .500 in the conference.
The Blue Hens secured a 1-0 advantage at the 70:57 mark of the second half when Lenczyk capitalized on an opportunity off a rebound off a UNCW defender in the center of the penalty area. UD senior forward Ali Miller was credited with an assist and the game-winning goal was Lenczyk's third on the year.
“Anna Lenczyk was a rock star this weekend,” Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda said about his senior. “She set up our winning goal on Friday and scoring the winner today.”
With the victory, it marks the first time the Blue Hens have won both matches of the southern road trip against UNCW and Georgia State. Delaware finished the month of September with a 7-2 record after today’s shutout win.
“It was great to have so many people contribute to the success of the weekend because six points on the road is a great accomplishment,” Grzenda added. “I’m really pleased with our defensive effort the past four games, the girls are working very hard for each other.”
Delaware junior goalkeeper Jess Levy registered her fourth shutout of the season as the Holland, Pa. native made five saves in the win.
UNCW’s senior goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter suffered the defeat after making four saves in the match.
Led by Miller’s four shots on goal, the Blue Hens collected 12 shots in the win, but were out shot by UNCW’s 16. Sophomore forward Stephanie Bronson was the only Seahawk with two shots on goal in the match.
The Blue Hens will continue their CAA schedule by traveling to Long Island, N.Y. to play the Hofstra University Pride on Friday, October 4th at 7 p.m., but return to Delaware Mini Stadium on Sunday, October 7 at 1 p.m. to battle the Northeastern University Huskies.
