Delaware women's soccer announces additions
The University of Delaware women’s soccer program has presented seven new additions to the team as the 2015 recruiting class was announced Friday. The seven incoming freshmen will join the squad in August.
The list of newcomers includes Alexa Faulmino, Karlee Panella, Paige DiGuglielmo, Sofia Munn, Riley Curtin, Heather Rucci, and Abby Schlegelmilch.
“The Delaware soccer staff and players would like to say 'welcome' to our 2015 recruits and their parents,” said University of Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. “We are extremely excited to welcome our seven new recruits for next year. As the recruiting process unfolded, we could tell that this was going to be a special class. We have some very athletic and technically-gifted players who we expect to make an immediate impact. They have already meshed well with our current players who are just as excited to start training with their new teammates.”
Faulmino is one of three Delaware natives joining the UD women’s soccer program for the fall of 2015. Faulmino is a dynamic forward from the Central Delaware Soccer Association Riptide where she helped her team to six straight state championship games, including three state championship titles.
Faulmino is the third player in Caesar Rodney High School history to score 100 goals, which she accomplished during her junior campaign. She also led the team in assists during her sophomore season. In each of her three seasons, she was selected first team All-Henlopen Conference and first team All-State.
In three seasons at Padua Academy in Wilmington, Panella accumulated 37 goals and 46 assists on the way to helping her team to three state championships and a 51-3-1 record. She has been chosen to lead the team as a captain for her senior season.
Panella is a member of the Delaware Rush Elite soccer program where she led the team in scoring for four of the past five seasons. She also made a name for herself in the Delaware track & field community by helping her team win two indoor track state championships and two cross country state championships.
DiGuglielmo has been a four-year starter for the Wilmington Charter School program where she served as captain during senior season. In DiGuglielmo’s sophomore season, she was a first team All-Blue Hen Conference and second team All-State selection after leading Charter in both goals and assists. She also led the team in assists during her junior season and was voted first team All-Blue Hen Conference and first team All-State.
When not lacing up her cleats for the soccer team, DiGuglielmo has been a three-time first team all-conference and All-State selection in field hockey. DiGuglielmo has also set herself apart in the classroom as a National Honor Society member.
Munn comes to Delaware from Brooklyn, N.Y. where she attended The Brooklyn Latin School. Munn is a technical and crafty midfielder for the Manhattan Hotspur Club team, as well as a captain for the Latin School Titans. She has been a member of the New York East ODP state team since 2012 and is a member of the Region 1 ODP pool. In each of her first three years of high school,
Munn has earned Approbation, and this year as a senior she has received Approbation with Distinction. She was also chosen as the Socrates Award recipient for outstanding performance in Socratic seminars.
Curtin is a Distinguished Honor Roll student at Hershey (Pa.) High School where she is an A student, a National Honor Society member, and was a Future Business Leaders of America District champion and state qualifier in both 2014 and 2015. She was given the College Board AP Honors Award in 2014 and was chosen to be the Math Team Captain in 2015.
Curtin has been a member of the varsity soccer team for four seasons and served as captain the last two years. During that time she was chosen to the Pennsylvania District 3 All-Star team, the Mid-Penn Conference All-Star team, and accumulated over 100 points. As a member of the PA Classics Club team, she has been named to the ASL All-Event team for two years while helping her team to an ASL Championship. As a swimmer, Curtin was a part of a conference, district, and state championship team.
Rucci committed to Delaware as a product of the Bethesda ECNL Club program and the Maryland ODP State team. More recently, she has played with the Premier Soccer Club. Rucci has been a four-year starter at the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md. where she carries a 3.5 GPA.
As a senior captain of the team, she was voted the IND Award recipient, which is given to the team's Most Valuable Player and greatest producer.
Schlegelmilch will be added to the UD goalkeeping core for the 2015 season. Schlegelmilch’s length and athleticism has provided both her club team and high school program with an impressive gatekeeper.
For the past four years, she has been a varsity starter and was the team captain during her senior season at Penn Manor High School in Millersville, Pa. She earned first team All-Lancaster Lebanon League honors and was an honor roll student at Penn Manor.
The Blue Hens finished the 2014 season with a 7-9-2 overall record, including a 3-4-2 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association.
