DeLuga Leads No. 6 Warhawks to 15th Straight
Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) scored her first two goals of the season as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team defeated UW-Platteville 2-0 to win their fifteenth straight game and improve to 16-1 overall and 5-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The match was played at Platteville, who falls to 9-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
As they normally do, the Warhawks came out with intense offensive pressure. UW-W earned three corner kicks in the first seven minutes of play.
On the third corner, Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) headed in a cross from Kaci Schonert (Racine, Wis./Horlick) for her first goal of the season and second of her collegiate career. Schonert's assist was her twelfth of the season, tying the school record set in 2011 by Emily Gerber.
DeLuga extended the Warhawk lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute, this time scoring with a header on a corner kick from Emily Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee).
UW-W went on to outshoot the Pioneers 11-5 in the match.
Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) played the entire match and made one save to earn her eighth shutout of the season, three shy of the school record.
UW-W's fifteen consecutive wins ties a school record set in 2014.
The Warhawks have two games remaining on their regular season schedule. The first is at UW-La Crosse on Saturday at 1 p.m. The last game is a home contest against UW-Stevens Point on October 29 at 4 p.m.
