DeMike Goal Gives Bison 1-0 Win Over UNI in Season Opener
WATERLOO, Iowa - North Dakota State senior Morgan DeMike's 68th minute goal proved to be the difference in a 1-0 win over Northern Iowa on Sunday, Aug. 21. The Bison open the season 1-0 and UNI falls to 1-1.
The Bison held a 5-2 shot advantage in the first half and seniors Abbey Moenkedick and Michelle Gaffaney both forced saves from UNI goalie Lauren Potzman.
NDSU came out firing in the second half with junior Brooklyn Dyce and sophomore Stephanie Jacobson notching shots in the first minutes.
DeMike found the back of the net in the 68th minute to give NDSU the lead. After a passing sequence down the right side, DeMike received a pass from freshman Tristyn Walczak and slotted the ball home from 10 yards out. It was DeMike's second career game-winning goal and the first career assist for Walczak.
Senior goalie Kalani Bertsch made one save in the shutout win and earned her 11th career shutout. The Bison outshot the Panthers, 12-4, and tallied eight corner kicks to UNI's four.
NDSU continues its road swing next weekend in Honolulu, Hawai'i, where the team will play Hawai'i Aug. 26 and California Aug. 27.
