Denver Earns 3-1 Win at Cal Poly
DENVER-The University of Denver men's soccer team captured its first road win of the season on Sunday in a 3-1 victory over Cal Poly.
"I thought that it was a good result after a tough loss on Friday," head coach Bobby Muuss said. "I was real proud of the character that we showed in a tough environment here this afternoon."
Senior forward Kellan Christensen (Layton, Utah) turned a Pioneer (2-4-2) throw-in into a set-piece in the 13th minute, arching his throw into the penalty box. Freshman forward Christian Volesky (Henderson, Nev.) won the ball, took a couple of touches, and then sent his shot past CP starting keeper Patrick McLain to put the Pioneers up a goal.
A pair of junior defenders combined for DU's second goal as Drew Beckie (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) knocked home his third of the weekend and fourth of the season in the 24th minute, beating the keeper one-on-one after a flick from Blake Shannon (Houston, Texas) freed Beckie behind the Mustangs (3-3-2) backline.
In the 72nd minute Beckie was booked for a foul just outside the penalty area, and the Mustangs took advantage of the resulting free kick. Senior defender Cameron Walters started the scoring opportunity, playing it to junior forward Benny Estes who struck it past DU junior goalkeeper Maté Aguirre (Centennial, Colo.) on the first touch to bring CP to within one.
With the Mustangs in search of an equalizer for just over 15 minutes, senior midfielder Matt Kirby (Beaumont, Texas) regained the two-goal advantage for the Pioneers in the 88th minute. Junior forward Nate Sackeyfio (Seattle, Wash.) created the Kirby goal after his shot was too hot to handle for CP backup keeper Chase Hauser. The rebound fell to the feet of Kirby for the put-back.
The Pioneers won the match despite the Mustangs' 20-8 advantage in shots and 8-3 edge in corners.
Denver will return home to open up Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play against Air Force on Saturday at CIBER Field. The Pioneers conference opener will kickoff at 7 p.m. MT.
