Denver Upends San Jose State, 4-0
DENVER - Junior midfielder Cole Chapleski (Broomfield, Colo.) scored his first two goals of the season on Friday night, leading the University of Denver men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over San Jose State at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
"I thought it was one of our most complete performances," head coach Bobby Muusssaid. "We got a very good goal early. We let up a little midway through the first half, but we responded in the second half - I think we outshot them 13-1. When we have a group of guys playing well at the same time, we get results like we did here tonight."
For the second-consecutive Friday night, Denver (7-4-3, 2-3-1 MPSF, 7 pts.) opened the scoring early in the match, this time on a Blake Shannon (Houston, Texas) header off aJosh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.) restart. Wren whipped a free kick into the box from just inside the corner flag and onto Shannon's head. The senior defender's header flew inside the near post from six-yards out to beat San Jose State (6-6-1, 3-2-1 MPSF, 10 pts.) goalkeeper Michael Schwinn. Shannon's goal came 2:33 into the match, 40 seconds later than junior midfielder Zach Bolden's (Denver, Colo.) breakthrough last Friday against Houston Baptist.
Chapleski stretched the lead to two in the 23rd minute on a shot from close range. Freshman midfielder Malcolm Harris (Damascus, Md.) played a high, floating cross from the right side of the penalty area that Chapleski buried into the back of the net.
The Pioneers then found the net twice in less than a minute to close out the 4-0 victory. The first came on Chapleski's second goal of the evening. Shannon fired a shot that pinged off the post and fell to the feet of Chapleski. The Broomfield, Colo., native took a touch and then scorched the ball past the keeper from the top of the box to extend the advantage to 3-0 in the 81st minute.
Denver's fourth goal came in the 82nd minute when the Pioneers were awarded a penalty for a foul on the left side of the box. In his first match in nearly a month, senior forwardJoe Eubanks (Denver, Colo.) curled the spot-kick to the right of the goalie and into the back of the net.
The Pioneers outshot the Spartans 22-4 in the match, including 13-1 in the second half.
Denver will wrap-up its four-match homestand against Seattle on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. MT. The match will be streamed live on Pioneer Vision.
