DeSousa Named A-Sun Player of the Week
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After helping the FGCU men’s soccer team erase a one-goal halftime deficit last Thursday at Jacksonville with his two goals, freshman Felipe DeSousa (Vila Velha, Brazil/Wharton HS-FL) has been named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
DeSousa is the second Eagle to win the award this season, joining senior Will Morse (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) who won the award on Sept. 10.
The first of DeSousa’s two goals against the Dolphins came in the 47th minute when he knotted the score at 2-2. The 2-2 score remained after 90 minutes of play in regulation and in the 105th minute of double-overtime DeSousa struck again, providing his third game-winner of the year that gave the Eagles’ a three-game A-Sun win streak, the fourth consecutive season they’ve produced such a streak.
DeSousa has been a force in his first season in the Green and Blue, providing team-highs of 11 points and five goals in his 10 games played. DeSousa is tied for second in the A-Sun in total goals, goals per game (0.50) and points per game (1.10). He enters this weekend with four goals in his last four games and at least one point in five of his last seven contests.
FGCU (6-5-2, 3-1-1 A-Sun) will look to build on its current three-game win streak when it hosts second place ETSU (8-5-2, 4-1 A-Sun) on Friday night. The game is a rematch of last year’s A-Sun Championship game in which the Eagles won, 1-0, to earn the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. with senior ceremonies for FGCU’s five-member class starting around 6:40 p.m.
