Detroit Mercy Blasts Eastern Michigan, 3-0

DETROIT (9/17/2017) -- Three different Titans found the back of the net and the defense gave up very few good looks as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team cruised past Eastern Michigan, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Titan Field.
Seniors Rachel DeLuca and Phylisha Drayton each has a goal and an assist and freshman Kelli Doyle added her second marker of the season, while the defense allowed just three shots on goal, all stopped by junior Marina Manzo.
The Titans (3-6-1) outshot the Eagles (3-5-1), 10-8, but Detroit Mercy saw seven of those shots on net on the day.
The win ended the Titans six-game slide as they moved to 2-1-1 at home this season.
Detroit Mercy will have nearly a week off before the red, white and blue return to the pitch hosting IUPUI on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m. The game is part of a soccer doubleheader with the men entertaining Belmont at 1 p.m.
First Half
Each team had three shots in the first half as the game was more of a defensive battle.
The Titans were aggressive in the first 10 minutes as three offsides were called against them
Detroit Mercy had the first look on net as senior Suzie Redick had a shot that was saved in the 11th minute.
The Titans struck in the 28th minute as they took advantage of a foul and on a set piece, DeLuca sent a pass into the box that Drayton headed pass the EMU keeper.
Detroit Mercy held off a couple of Eastern Michigan corner kicks in the 31st minute, not allowing a shot.
Second Half
The Titans got on the board again early in the second half as DeLuca fired one past the goalie from 15 yards out at 47:50.
Manzo made her first save at 55:15 off an EMU corner kick.
Just a minute later, the Titans stretched their lead to 3-0 as Drayton dribbled the ball into the box and then made a quick pass to Doyle, who put it past the keeper on the right side.
Manzo had another save in the 60th minute and again in the 72nd to keep the Eagles scoreless.
Detroit Mercy almost had two more goals as a shot by Doyle was saved at 72:55 and 81:28, while freshman Sophie Mapes had a shot that was saved at 80:05.
Game Notes
The Titans now lead the all-time series 9-8-4 and have won five of the last six games from the Eagles.
The Titans outshot their opponent for the second time this season, also accomplishing that task against Lawrence Tech.
The six-straight losses was the longest losing streak since dropping six straight in 2009.
It was Manzo's fourth shutout of the year and the 16th of her career.
It was Drayton's second goal of the season and the 11th of her career.
DeLuca now has a career-best 11 points on the season on three goals and five assists.
