Detroit women fall to Hawaii

September 28, 2009
After falling into an early hole the University of Detroit(w) Mercy women’s soccer team was unable to forge a comeback, and in a rematch from Friday morning in Honolulu the Titans suffered the same fate in 2-0 loss to the University of Hawaii Sunday morning.

The game, which took place at 1 a.m. E.T. Sunday was played at 7 p.m. local time.

Hawaii (4-6-1) took the lead in the 18th minute when Ambree Ako made the most of a breakaway, depositing a pass from teammate Britta Bourne into the lower left hand corner of the net. The Rainbow Wahine added an insurance goal in the 50th minute when Ako assisted Bourne.

In the first match of the weekend between the two squads, Rainbow Wahine Bourne took 15 shots against the Titans. UDM made some adjustments and held her in check with only five shots Sunday morning, but Hawaii still managed to outshoot Detroit 16-4 while holding a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Sophomores Alexandra Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville), Alison Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville) and Lauren Roffey (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield), and fresman Sarah Dzuris (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) each accounted for the Titans shots in the game. Alexandra Suschak and Dzuris recorded UDM’s shots on goal.

Detroit (2-7-1) will return to the mainland Monday afternoon and then have four days to prepare for Horizon League opener at Cleveland State Friday at 7 p.m.

The Titans topped the Vikings 4-0 in Detroit in 2008. In that meeting Alexandra Suschak, senior Trina Kochanski (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) and junior Archana Wadhawan (Troy, MI/Troy) each scored a goal, and junior Selena Stanski (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne’s Secondary) tallied three assists. Cleveland State is 1-8-0 on the season and fell to IUPUI on overtime Saturday. The Vikings open HL play Sunday afternoon at Wright State.
