'Dogs Earn Seventh Shutout of Year
Junior Callie Hancockpicked up her third game winning goal of the season after the Fresno State women's soccer team shutout Western Athletic Conference rival San Jose State 1-0 Saturday night on the road. Hancock has scored all four of the Bulldogs last four goals.
"It was a very intense game," said Head Coach Brian Zwaschka. "We knew there was going to be a pretty exceptional build up with the idea the last time we met San Jose State was in the championship match last fall. We didn't want to approach it like that. We wanted to approach it like this was another game and another step and deal with pressure we get. I was really proud of how the team handled all that because San Jose State really didn't make it easy."
Fresno State went on the attack early. Senior Molly Nizzoli had the first shot of the night 1:51 into the match.
Sophomore Kayla Kret got her head on a corner kick by Nizzoli 13 minutes late that hit the crossbar.
Hancock was there to punch in the rebound for her eighth goal of the year. It was Kret's first assist this season.
"Today's goal was not the typical Callie goal," added Zwaschka. "She just took a chance on a loose ball and was the first one to it. We have a saying, that the players that think quickest win and this was absolutely an instance where she capitalized with a great reaction that allowed her to take advantage."
The Bulldogs' defense held San Jose State off the board for the remainder of the match to earn their seventh shutout of the year. The win marked the fifth shutout for freshman Katie DeVault who finished with four saves.
Zwaschka wanted to dedicate the win to Frank Burnette, a long-time friend, who recently passed away.
Fresno State (8-3-3) continues its road trip to the islands to take on Hawai'i in its second straight WAC contest on Oct. 14 at 9 p.m. PST. The Bulldogs lead the series 8-7-2. The last time the 'Dogs traveled to the islands, they came away with a 1-0 win on Oct. 4, 2009. Zwaschka is 1-1 against the Rainbow Wahine.
