'Dogs Sweep WAC Honors
For the first time in program history, the Fresno State women's soccer team swept the Western Athletic Conference weekly honors. Sophomores Lauren Lindstrom and Kayla Kretwere named WAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for Sept. 19-25.
"I think it's a really cool thing for those individual players," said Head Coach Brian Zwaschka. "But I always look at those things as an extension of what the team is doing. It's always a team effort and responsibility to put players in a position to make key impact plays. And when that all comes to fruition, it's great for the team and the individual representatives in terms of awards."
The Bulldogs fought for 206 minutes to earn their 1-0-1 finish over the weekend and both Lindstrom and Kret were on the pitch for the full 206. The team is currently on a four-game undefeated streak after notching two wins and two ties.
"The idea that we swept [the awards] means that it was a team response on both sides of the ball," Zwaschka said. "And that's the overall recognition. I know that Lauren and Kayla look at it like that."
Lindstrom scored the game winning goal against Cal Poly (Sept. 24) just 6:13 into overtime. Her second goal of the season came off a deflected corner kick and gave the Bulldogs the 3-2 win over the Mustangs, who have been ranked as high as ninth on the western regional poll by National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Lindstrom currently has a .600 shot on goal percentage and is tied for third in the conference in game winning goals (2).
Kret, a starter on the defense that held No. 8 Pepperdine scoreless for 108 minutes, headed in the game-tying goal with 18 minutes remaining in the second half. The Bulldogs went on to earn the 1-1 tie (Sept. 25) against the top 10 team. It was Kret's third goal of the year and second against a ranked opponent. All three of her goals this year have been headers. She is tied for third on the team in goals (3).
"Any player at any level of contribution likes to have feedback," added Zwaschka. "It's even better when it's some positive recognition. I think that in this case they're of course going to feel very good about it and want to continue this kind of productivity, but they're also responsible enough individually and towards the team dynamic. There's nothing wrong with being recognized along the way just like there's nothing wrong with celebrating a very good match. But as soon as the next whistle blows, that's history and the next game is the next game and that's where the focus will be."
The Bulldogs open conference play at home this coming Friday, Sept. 30 against Idaho at 7 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium. Fresno State is undefeated (7-0) against the WAC rival, including a 3-0 record during Zwaschka's tenure. The last time the two programs met was in the first round of the 2010 WAC Tournament on Nov. 4 when the 'Dogs won 3-0.
