Double Overtime Match Ends 0-0 for Titans in Reno
RENO, Nev. -- The Titan women's soccer team (4-1-1) went into overtime for the first time in 2011 and the two extra sessions did not solve anything as the final was a 0-0 draw against UNLV (1-3-1). The game was the first of two for Detroit in the Wolf Pack Invitational played on the campus of the University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada.
“Sometimes we had the upper hand and sometimes they did. I thought it was an even game between two good teams and that a tie was a fair result,” said head coach Mike Lupenec. “With our team getting used to this new environment and with the travel and higher altitude, I thought we played well.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Oberheim (Springfield, VA/Lee) made eight saves in 120 minutes of action recording her third straight shutout. Oberheim has started the last four games for Detroit making 18 saves allowing just one goal helping the Titans to a 3-0-1 record.
The Rebels took nine shots to Detroit's five in the second half but that was the only difference in shot attempts on the evening as UNLV finished with a 16-12 shooting advantage. Detroit had nine corner kicks, including three straight in a span of 3:47 in the first half, compared to just two overall for UNLV.
In the first 20 minutes of play, the Titans generated offensive opportunities with three shots, two on goal, and three corner kicks. UNLV defenders got in the way of two of those shots and the third was saved by the goalkeeper. Sophomore Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) and freshman Alyssa Riley (Whitby, ON/Father Leo J. Austin) each had one of the three shots with both players having their header attempts saved by the opposition.
“We had nine corner kicks and we could not capitalize on our chances but at the same time, you have to give them credit for doing a good job defending us,” said Lupenec.
In the first overtime period, senior Lauren Roffey (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) took a shot but it was blocked. The second overtime saw two more Titan chances but senior Alyssa Korson (Suttons Bay, MI/Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) also had a shot that was blocked and junior Janae Paveglio's (Flushing, MI/Flushing) shot went high.
The Titans will stay in Reno until their next contest on Sunday when they will take on Portland State at 2:00 p.m. (EST).
