Dreher’s Second Half Goal Not Enough in 3-1 Loss at Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Indiana women’s soccer team gave up a pair of first half goals to the Minnesota Golden Gophers (7-8-2, 4-3-2 Big Ten) on Friday night and were not able to make the comeback on the way to a 3-1 loss on the road. Redshirt freshman Rebecca Dreher scored her second goal of the season in the second half to account for the lone Indiana (6-10-1, 2-7 Big Ten) goal.
“We had a couple of defensive miscues in the first half but we came out of the locker room determined to get a goal in the second half,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. “We had a number of chances, hit the post a couple times, and gave tremendous effort all the way until the end.”
Dreher’s goal came at 77:46 in the second half when freshman Abby Smith delivered a corner kick to the back post where Dreher soared into the air to head it home over a Minnesota defender. It is the second assist of the season for Smith.
Seven of the last eight goals scored by the Hoosiers have come in the second half after starting out the first part of the season scoring a majority of their goals in the first half.
Minnesota scored first in the 17th minute and then added another tally in the 32nd minute to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. They then tacked on a third goal in the 75th minute just before Dreher’s goal.
In the game, Minnesota was credited with 22 shots while Indiana had six. Lindsay Campbell racked up seven saves in the contest for the Hoosiers while Kat Parkhill had three in goal for the Gophers.
Indiana will continue its weekend road trip with a game at 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at Wisconsin.
