Drexel Edges NJIT
NEWARK, NJ--Visiting Drexel scored a pair of goals in each half, edging NJIT, 4-3, in non-conference men's soccer action at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
Drexel recorded its second straight win of the season, improving to 4-3-1 overall while NJIT moved to 2-4-1 overall.
The NJIT offense outshot Drexel, 18-10 (10-5) on shots on goal. Senior Regsan Watkins and sophomore Alejandro Rabell each recorded a goal and an assist for the Highlanders.
Senior Rene White, the active NCAA men's soccer goals and points leader, was the third goal scorer for the Highlanders. White stands with 38 career goals and 82 career points.
Drexel forward Laolu Daranijo scored a pair of goals in the victory while Chris Donovan added a goal and an assist for the Dragons.
Kyle Tucker was credited with the assist on Donovan's goal in the 39th minute. The third goal scorer for the Dragons was Yassine Elkahlon, who registered his first goal of the season.
In the 14th minute, NJIT had a pair of scoring opportunities by Watkins, his initial shot saved by the Drexel's keeper Stephen Kopsachilis His second shot sailed high.
Two minute later, Sergio Pita blasted a shot on frame but it was saved by a diving Drexel keeper. Watkins followed with a strike which was deflected away by the keeper.
Daranijo nearly put Drexel up 1-0 in the 21st minute on a wide open net but couldn't put it home, as his shot hit the right post.
NJIT grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on a goal by Watkins, whose shot froze the Drexel keeper, netting his fourth goal of the season. Rabell was credited with the assist.
Daranijo tied the match at 1-1 five minutes later in the 30th minute, splitting two NJIT defenders assisted by Donovan. The goal for Daranijo is his sixth of the season.
Drexel took a 2-1 advantage off a corner kick by Tucker who found Donovan inside the box, flicking it into the net past NJIT's Samuel Reisgys.
In the 65th minute, NJIT's White scored the equalizer into the bottom left corner of the net on a penalty kick for a 2-2 score.
Daranijo with another opportunity to score on an open net in the 67th minute went inches to the left of the post.
Drexel regained the lead, 3-2, in the 71st minute on an unassisted goal by Elkahloun. NJIT defender Zach Halma nearly got his left foot on the ball to make the save.
NJIT knotted the match at 3-3 in the 82nd minute on a blast off the right foot of Rabell into the far left corner of the goal, assisted by Watkins. The goal is the first of the season for Rabell.
A minute later, Drexel regained the lead, 4-3, on a penalty kick by Daranijo, netting his second goal of the match and seventh of the season.
NJIT will return to America East Conference action on April 2 when the Highlanders visit Stony Brook. Kickoff slated for 1pm.
In the first meeting in Newark on March 12, Stony Brook, which scored two goals in the first 10 minutes held on for the 2-0 road victory at NJIT.
