Duke Battles to 0-0, Double-Overtime Draw at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – For only the second time this season, the Duke women’s soccer team was held without a goal as the Blue Devils traveled to Clemson and came away with a 0-0 double-overtime result on Thursday evening at Riggs Field. 

 

It was a second half and overtime that featured excellent scoring chances for the Blue Devils but two attempts hit the post and two hit the crossbar that kept Duke off the scoreboard.  The Blue Devils now move to 5-6-4, 2-4-3 in the ACC. 

 

The first half featured only nine shots combined with the Lady Tigers earning the only legitimate chance for a goal.  Clemson thought it registered a goal early but the attempt was called back due to offside by the Lady Tigers. 

 

Clemson held a 7-3 advantage in shots with junior Kelly Cobb attempting two and Audrey Gibson heading a shot that was saved in the first half. 

 

The Blue Devils dominated the run of play in the second half and overtime as Duke outshot Clemson, 7-3. 

 

Duke had its best chance of the match in the 75^th minute as senior Kaitlyn Kerr sent a shot in that rebounded off the chest of Clemson goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.  Redshirt senior Kim DeCesare was attacking near the line and tried a left-footed attempt that hit the crossbar from point-blank range and came back out of the box. 

 

As time was expiring in the second half, Duke senior Laura Weinberg sent a left-footed shot from outside the box that hit the top of the crossbar and went over the goal. 

 

Clemson held a slight, 9-8, advantage in shots at the end of regulation.  Kerr, Cobb and DeCesare each totaled two shots over the first 90 minutes.

 

The Lady Tigers registered the first shot attempt in the first overtime that went wide, but it was the Blue Devils that had the best scoring chance.  In the 98^th minute, Weinberg got the ball on the left side of the box and sent a shot towards the right side of the goal but it bounced off the right post and came out.  The Lady Tigers held a 10-9 shot advantage through 100 minutes.

 

To start the second overtime, the Blue Devils had another stellar chance at scoring as a Duke player was taken down in the box and then Weinberg slid a shot past Sheridan that hit the left post and bounced away from the goal. 

 

Redshirt junior Meghan Thomas started in goal for the second straight match and played well as the 6-2 keeper posted her second career shutout with two saves over 110 minutes.  Sheridan added two saves for the Lady Tigers in goal. 

 

The Blue Devils fell to 0-0-4 this season in overtime matches.  Both teams finished the night with 10 shots with Weinberg leading Duke with three attempts. 

 

Duke will close its four-match road trip on Sunday, Oct. 20 as the Blue Devils will travel to ninth-ranked Notre Dame for a 1:00 p.m., contest.
