Dukes' Goal Gives Marauders Share of PSAC Regular Season Title
West Chester, Pa. – Sophomore Andrew Dukes scores a team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 71st minute to give No. 13 Millersville a 1-0 win over West Chester in the regular season finale. With the win the Marauders claim a share of the PSAC regular season title with Lock Haven.
Millersville (10-6-1, 6-2-1 PSAC) and West Chester (5-9-3, 0-6-3 PSAC) were scoreless for 70 minutes of play. The first half was an even battle with the Marauders taking an 8-7 advantage in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
West Chester's goalkeeper Garret Bleiler made three saves, while Millersville Brad Benzing stop five shots on goal in the first half.
In the 71st minute, the first goal of the game was finally put on the board. Freshman Christopher Davidson fired a shot that hit the post and came down in the box. Dukes, in one motion, tapped the ball past the goalkeeper to give Millersville the lead it had been looking for with less than 20 minutes to play in regulation.
The Marauders took over the second half, outshooting the Golden Rams by a margin of 12-3 in the side. Millersville tallied 20 shots, seven on goal in the match.
Benzing, only facing three shots in the second half, made the only save he needed to in the final minutes to earn his sixth shutout, team's seven, of the season.
Millersville captured a share of its first-ever PSAC (one division) regular season title. The Marauders have claimed four PSAC East regular season titles while the conference was separated into two divisions.
Despite capturing a share of the 2011 PSAC regular season title, the Marauders will take the second seed in the PSAC Tournament. Lock Haven, who shares the title, holds the first three tiebreakers over Millersville and looks to take the top seed.
Millersville will host the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The Marauders will face California (Pa.) who sits in third place with 19 points. Check back to millersvilleathletics.com for the official PSAC Tournament schedule.
