Dwyer's hat trick, Mustangs bury Texas-Permian Basin, 5-0
September 23, 2011
ODESSA, Texas - Midwestern State senior Chris Dwyer put on a show with a hat trick to lift the 12th-ranked Mustangs to a 5-0 win over Texas-Permian Basin Friday night at the UTPB Soccer Field.
"Chris had some close friends in attendance tonight and really put on a show for them," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "They need to come watch him more often the way he played tonight."
Dwyer led a stellar effort by the Midwestern State''s reserves which accounted for each of the Mustangs'' five goals including three after intermission.
"We finally put it together in the second half," Elder said. "Our bench did a great job and each of them came in and created great opportunities."
But it was junior striker David Freeland who shook the Mustangs out of a sluggish start with a goal in the 31st minute.
"B.A. (Catney) served a great ball through the gap," Elder said. "David faked the shot, the keeper went down and he scored it. That''s what he does well."
Dwyer then put his first goal into the net when completed a great combination from Freeland and senior midfielder Dean Lovegrove for a 2-0 lead in the 43rd minute.
Dwyer notched the first two tallies of the second half with the first coming on a penalty kick after junior forward Zach Funk was taken down in the box in the 52nd minute.
Funk proved even creative by assisting on Dwyer''s third score in the 63rd minute and found Brett Helm for another goal in the 74th minute.
"I was proud of the way we got after them," Elder said. "This is a team that is capable of scoring goals at any time. We kept our composure and kept going at it."
The Mustangs (5-1) returns to the MSU Soccer Field to play host to No. 19 Texas A&M International Friday night at 7 p.m.
"We had five road games and won four, so I can''t complain," Elder said. "We''ll be happy to get home."
Texas-Permian Basin dropped to 2-5 on the season.
