Eagles Fall to UConn, 1-0
The Boston College women's soccer team lost to former Big East rival Connecticut, 1-0, in front of 665 fans at the Newton Soccer Field. BC is now 1-2-0 on the season and will travel to New York to play at Hofstra on Sunday, Sept. 1. UConn improved to 1-2-0 and will host Central Connecticut on Sunday.
Both teams had four shots on goal, while BC had the edge in overall shots, 13-8. BC had six corner kicks while UConn had just two.
Connecticut struck in the 52nd minute when Gabrielle Charno sent a through ball between the Eagles defense. Rachel Hill shot from 24 yards out landed high into the far post for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles had a number of good chances, as they pushed forward looking for the equalizer.
In the 64th minute, McKenzie Meehan (three shots) crossed the ball into the box, directed right at Stephanie McCaffrey (three shots). UConn's goalkeeper Emily Armstrong (four saves) came out to smother the ball before the Eagles forward could get a foot on the ball.
Another great chance came when freshman Hayley Dowd's cross landed to the left of the UConn goalmouth. Meehan could not get a strong shot off and Armstrong made the save.
With BC pushing forward, UConn's offense had a chance to put the game away with just under four minutes to play when Jennifer Skogerboe ripped a shot from outside the box. BC's goalkeeper Jess Mickelson (three saves) made a diving save and the Eagles cleared the ensuing corner kick attempt.
