Early Goal Lifts SIUE Past St. Louis
ST. LOUIS – Kayla Delgado scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season just 41 seconds into the game, and SIUE made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over Saint Louis Friday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
Delgado took a pass from the left side from Marissa Delgado and fired a shot from 25 yards that found the upper right corner.
Saint Louis (1-4) earned a 13-10 edge in shots – including an 8-3 advantage in the second half – and put together several solid scoring chances against SIUE (3-1). The Bills’ best opportunity came on a penalty kick in the 85th minute, but the attempt was knocked away by SIUE goalkeeper Jennifer Pelley, one of her five saves.
Jenny Hummert fired a game-high four shots, including two shots on frame. Abbey Stock, seeing her first action of the season after recovering from injury, collected three shots, while Kirsten Clemens had two. SLU keeper Hanna Benben made a career-high six saves.
“Giving up a goal in the first minute is, unfortunately, a lesson we have to take from this game,” head coach Katie Shields said. “We knew they could shoot from outside, but we didn’t get pressure on the ball on their scoring play. To their credit, they made us pay.
“I told the team that if they played the entire game like they played the last 89 minutes, it’s a different result and a different feeling,” Shields said. “But there were some encouraging things in the attacking half; we created a lot of chances, and the goals will come. Now we have to respond and get ready for Sunday.”
The Billikens welcome Evansville to Hermann Stadium Sunday, September 8, at 1 p.m.
